|
| | |
The easiest way is to install FileBanc Pro on their system and configure it for backup. From then on, everything will happen automatically! |
| | » |
How exactly does FileBanc Pro work?
|
| | |
Once you download and install FileBanc Pro and create your backup sets, it is constantly running in the background and on schedule to backup your files online to our secure data center. Any incremental changes in your files contained within your backup set will be compressed, encrypted and sent to our FileBanc servers over a secure SSL connection. You can restore files as well using the FileBanc Pro software or online by logging into your account at http://www.filebanc.com. |
| | » |
I already have a backup process. Why would I want to backup online?
|
| | |
That’s excellent that you have some sort of backup process in place. However, there are several reasons why you should consider backing up online. First, if you’re using traditional tape media, experts estimate that over half of the data currently stored on tapes will not restore correctly. Second, unless you take your backup media offsite to a secure storage facility, then you are not prepared in the event of a disaster such as a fire. Finally, with online backup you can restore your files from remote locations at any time and have the peace of mind that comes from knowing you can always access your important data from anywhere in the world! With FileBanc Pro, you can create your backup sets once, and forget about it and be rest assured that your files are safely being backed up. You even get email reports letting you know everything is working, and when something is wrong. |
| | » |
What are Server Extensions?
|
| | |
Server extensions are software that ensure that your database applications are correctly backed up in a usable state. They include support for in-use backup of Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino as well! One server extension is included in our Professional Plan and the Enterprise Plan contains unlimited extensions. |
| | » |
What is the difference between the software used in the Personal Plan and the software in the other plans?
|
| | |
Our Personal Plan comes with simple software that is optimized for backing up single computers without lots of extra options. The main differences are:
Only one computer or backup set can be used in the Personal Plan
Less features in the scheduler in the Personal Plan (optimized for home use)
Windows platforms only
English only
Higher bandwidth is included with the higher level plans (the 0.5Mb/s limit in the personal plan exceeds the upload capacity of a typical home broadband connection)
|
| | » |
What does SOHO mean?
|
| | |
Small Office/Home Office – this plan is for people that want flexibility and/or multiple computers without any server extensions.

| | » |
Will it backup my files if I’m not logged in?
|
| | |
Yes, there is a backup scheduler service that runs even when no one is logged in. Each backup set can have user credential explicitly set to allow backup of network resources. Alternatively, you can also configure the backup set to prompt to backup at every logout or shutdown. |
| | » |

| | » |
Does FileBanc Pro overwrite or disturb my existing Java components or Java Runtime?
|
| | |
Not at all. FileBanc Pro embeds its own Java engine so it can run self contained without the possibility of breaking other Java programs on your system. |
| | » |
Can I use FileBanc Pro on a server?
|
| | |
Absolutely! FileBanc Pro can be installed on a server using the resident client or via the command line and run on schedule. It has agents that support in-use backup of Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino as well!
|
| » |
Security |
| | » |
Is my data secure?
|
| | |
Yes. The data is first fully encrypted on your system using US Government's National Security Agency (NSA) TOP SECRET-approved encryption technology before it is uploaded to our servers over a secure SSL connection. Since the encryption key is only known to you, no one else can access your data – not even us. |
| | » |
Can anyone else access my files?
|
| | |
No one can access your files as they are encrypted and only you know the key. |
| | » |
Can I use FileBanc Pro with a firewall?
|
| | |
Yes. All the data is securely transmitted over port 80, which is usually open in all firewalls. |
| | » |
Can you store my encryption key for me so I don’t lose it?
|
| | |
In order to maintain strict privacy and the integrity of your data, we cannot store your key. |
| | » |
Can I change my encryption key?
|
| | |
Once set for a Backup Set, the encrypting key cannot be changed. This is necessary for the integrity of the Backup Set, making sure that backup data is only encrypted by one key. Otherwise, you will have problems remembering the two encrypting keys when you want to restore your files in the future. You need to recreate your Backup Set if you really want to change your encrypting key. |
| | » |
I lost my private encryption key. How can I get my files?
|
| | |
If you lose your encryption key, there is no way to restore your files. Be sure to remember this and keep it in a safe place!

Data |
| | » |
How does my retention policy work?
|
| | |
You set the retention policy for your data through the client software or through the web console for each backup set. If you are not using our advanced retention policy scheduling and set the data retention to seven days, then the data will be deleted seven days after it enters the retention area regardless of whether or not you run additional backups in the meantime. Files will be placed in the retention area whenever a backup is performed and they have either been deleted or modified. If modified, the original version will be placed in the retention area while the modified file will remain as the current version in your backup set data.
Retention policies can also be rather advanced. For example, you can create multiple generations of retained files just as you would if you were using tape. For instance you could keep an annual retention of data for a certain number of years, 13 rolling monthly versions, and 40 rolling daily versions giving you three generations of data and the system automatically handles the rolling overlapping data so that overlapping, duplicate data will be purged.
|
| | » |
How do I know how much storage my files will use in Windows?
|
| | |
You can click the right mouse button on a folder and choose properties and it will add up the number of files and total storage used by everything in that folder. For example, you can right click on "My Documents" and under the General tab it will display "Size on disk" which will tell you how much space all the files underneath that folder take, and "Contains" which tells you how many files and folders it contains. Remember that we only charge based on compressed storage so the actual amount of space used on our servers will probably be smaller by a factor of 2X-3X! |
| | » |
How do I know how much storage my files will use in Linux or Unix?
|
| | |
In Linux or Unix environments, you can use the "du" command at a shell prompt to get the size, e.g., "du -sh /home/jdoe" will tell you in plain terms the total storage used in that directory. Remember that we only charge based on compressed storage so the actual amount of space used on our servers will probably be smaller by a factor of 2X-3X! |
| | » |
Is the data compressed? Am I billed based on compressed or uncompressed data?
|
| | |
FileBanc Pro automatically compresses all data before transmitting. Unlike some of our competitors, we only charge based on the compressed storage required. Typical compression ratios of 2X-3X mean that you can typically store 2GB-3GB of raw data per 1GB of compressed storage yielding significant cost savings to you! |
| | » |
How much bandwidth do I need for back up and restore operations?
|
| | |
It depends on how much data you need to backup and restore. You can feasibly get away with a dial-up connection for incremental backups, though you probably would want to use our FileSeedTM service to create the initial backup image depending on the amount of data you are backing up. We certainly recommend broadband connectivity to make your backups as quick and painless as possible. |
| | » |
How long will my backups take?
|
| | |
The length of time backups take depends on the amount of data to be backed up and the upstream bandwidth available over your internet connection. Typical backup times for 500MB account plans can take a few hours to initially backup over most broadband connections. If you have several gigabytes of data, the initial backup can take several hours to a few days to complete. For very large data volumes, we recommend using the FileSeedTM service unless you have a very high bandwidth connection. See below for more information. |
| | » |
How long does a restore take?
|
| | |
Restoration times depend on the downstream bandwidth available and the amount of data to be restored. Most broadband connections at home have much faster download bandwidth than upload bandwidth, making restore times much faster. For the lower priced plans, however, we do limit bandwidth to .5 Mbps, which is still 4-5 times faster than typical upload speeds. |
| | » |
What if I have a huge amount of data that needs to be backed up and not a lot of bandwidth?
|
| | |
Take a look at our FileSeedTM service. |
| | » |
Can I backup Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft SQL Server?
|
| | |
Absolutely. One server extension is included in our Professional Plan and the Enterprise Plan contains unlimited extensions. |
| | » |
How do I know how much storage I’m using?
|
| | |
You can log into the web console and on the initial Profile page it will display your storage used under “Total Upload.” You can compare this with the “Quota” figure to see how much storage you have available. Additionally, the same information is available when running the FileBanc Pro software installed on your system in the information bar at the bottom of the application. |
| | » |
How many versions of a file can I have backed up?
|
| | |
You can have virtually unlimited versions of a file backed up. You can set how many versions are retained by choosing the “Retention Policy” underneath the backup set you choose. |
| | » |
Can I backup shared drives on other computers?
|
| | |
Yes, you can backup mapped drives to other computers. |
| | » |
How do I backup open files?
|
| | |
Volume Shadow Copy, which allows backup of open file, comes with Windows XP and 2003 by default. For older platforms, e.g. Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000 or NetWare, we would recommend adding a third party open file manager option (e.g. St. Bernard Open File Manager - http://www.stbernard.com) which might cost around US$100 for each workstation and US$300 for each server if open file backup is required. Nothing special is required to backup open files on Linux/Unix/Mac OS X because no files are held exclusively open by applications. |
| | » |
Can I restore files on a different computer than I used to back them up?
|
| | |
Yes. You can either install and use FileBanc Pro on a separate system and use your username and password to explore restored files to restore or you can directly log into the FileBanc console at http://www.filebanc.com and select the “Restore” menu option at the top of the page without the need to separately install the software!

| | » |
How do I exclude certain types of non-critical files to keep my storage usage down?
|
| | |
In the installed software, you can edit the “Backup Filter” settings under your backup set. Here, you can add filters that match a certain expression (for example, *doc for Microsoft Word documents) to be included or excluded or included to the exclusion of all others. This way, you can exclude mp3 files using “ends with mp3” in your filter or as a regular expression (*mp3$) and setting up the filter mode to “Exclude matched.” Alternatively, you can make the same filters by logging into http://www.filebanc.com and editing the filter settings after choosing your backup set. If you require additional assistance, you can view our knowledge base to get a list of the most common filters and file types you may want to include or exclude or contact support for additional assistance. |
| | » |
Can I manually backup files at any time?
|
| | |
Yes you can initiate a backup set manually at any time from within the FileBanc Pro software by clicking on the “Start Backup” icon in the toolbar. |
| | » |
Can I monitor all my backups and their status over the web, from home, or elsewhere?
|
| | |
You can view all your backup activity reports and statistics from the web console available at http://www. http://www.filebanc.com. |
| | » |
How are FileBanc Pro software updates issued?
|
| | |
Prior to each backup operation, FileBanc Pro checks to see if there is an updated version of the software. If one is available, FileBanc Pro downloads and installs it automatically without any user intervention. Since all the settings are maintained on the server, all your backup sets and other settings will be maintained. |
| | » |
What are off line backup, Logout backup reminder and Local backup features?
|
| | |
Off line backup is basically designed for notebook users who are off line most of the time and cannot rely on backup schedule to backup regularly. The backup interval allows notebook users to specify the interval that they would like their data to backup. If this interval has elapsed, backup will run automatically once this machine is online. Logout backup reminder asks user if they would like to backup if they logout of the computer or shutdown their computer. Local backup allows an extra copy of backup file to be kept on local hard disk when running a backup. |
| | » |
What is incremental backup and in-file delta and how do they work?
|
| | |
In an incremental backup, only modified files will be uploaded to the Backup Server. Furthermore, In-File Delta incremental backups only uploads the specific blocks of data which have changed within the file to the backup server rather than the entire file. This applies to not only physical files, but also MS SQL database files, MS Exchange transaction log files or any normal file in a Backup Set. For each modified file, FileBanc Pro would determine whether the entire file or only delta file should be uploaded. If the entire file is to be uploaded, the old version of the file will be moved to the Retention area. If only the delta file is to be uploaded, the previous delta files will be moved to the Retention area and the Data area should contain the original full backup file, checksum file and the latest delta of this file. |
| | » |
How do I get my file backups to happen on a regular schedule?
|
| | |
When you install the software it is set to backup nightly. You can alter this or set your own schedule by selecting “Backup Schedule” under the appropriate backup set. |
| | » |
How do I select only certain files to backup?
|
| | |
You can edit your backup sets either through the downloaded software interface or through the website by logging in. Then, after you select the appropriate backup set or create a new one, you can choose the document folders or directory paths to include under “Backup Source.”
|
| | » |
What is a backup set?
|
| | |
A backup set is a set of chosen files and folders to backup that can be independently scheduled from other backup sets. Backup sets can also have other options set that are independent, such as files to exclude for example. For instance, you may want to create a separate backup set for all your more important documents, backing up several versions of each and on an hourly schedule. On the other hand, you can create a daily with fewer versions of less important files. |
| | » |
How can I be sure my backups are working as scheduled?
|
| | |
Several ways. The easiest is to use the email reports that automatically notify you of any backup event. Not only will you be issued clean html reports of successful backups, you will also be emailed when errors happen or even if a backup is missed completely (e.g., your system is completely shut off). |
| | » |
How do I create a backup set?
|
| | |
There are two ways to create a backup set. One is through the web console and the other is the installed client software. You can login to the web console at http://www.filebanc.com and select the appropriate language under “FileBanc Professional Web Console” which will bring up the main page showing your customer profile information in a separate browser window. If you select the link at the top labeled “Backup Set,” you will be able to select existing backup sets which you can edit or remove, and you can also click “Add” to add a new set. The other method is to launch the FileBanc Pro software installed on your system and choosing the “New->File Backup Set” choice from the “Backup Set” menu. Which ever method you choose, the new backup set, when saved, will appear synchronized in both places. |
| | » |
Can I have multiple backup sets running at the same time?
|
| | |
Yes, you can have multiple backup sets running simultaneously. |
| | » |
Can I look at what files are backed up?
|
| | |
Yes, you can view the backed up files from FileBanc Pro by selecting on the Restore tab or from the web console by logging into http://www.filebanc.com and selecting “File Explorer.” You can also view files by generating a detailed report from the “Reports” menu. |
| | » |
What happens when I lose connectivity or my computer crashes in the middle of a backup? Do I have to start over?
|
| | |
The current backup operation in progress will resume where it left off next time it is scheduled to run. |
| | » |
